Western Instruments Inc. was incorporated in 1965 and operates from a 19-acre facility in Villeneuve, near Edmonton in Sturgeon County, Alberta, where a 10,000 sq ft building houses its machine tools, electronics lab, assembly areas and welding and fabrication shop. The company was founded to build ultrasonic testing equipment for welded tube and pipe, introduced its pit gauges in 1995 and launched the W-Series of portable magnetic particle inspection (MPI) equipment in 1999. W-Series products are built in both 115 V/60 Hz and 230 V/50 Hz versions and shipped around the world.

The W-Series covers AC, AC/DC, battery and permanent-magnet yokes, the WA, WS, WP and WD families of magnetising coils, ready-to-use inspection kits, mobile inspection booths and the field indicators, pull test bars and media that keep an MPI procedure compliant. Alongside it, Western makes the Tri-Gauge and Multi-Weld gauges, dial and digital pit depth gauges, bridging pit gauges for pipeline corrosion assessment, WDV-PD coils for pre-weld demagnetisation of line pipe, the Flash Gauge and multichannel ultrasonic testing systems for tube and pipe mills, and ultrasonic step blocks and couplants.
