Pit Gauge Kits

Western packages its pit gauge blades and indicators into kits specified by senior inspectors for particular industries, each in a carrying case with the indicator of choice, a spare contact point and instructions. The Vessel Inspectors Kit (N88-VI), the most popular, combines Reaching, Pocket and Basic blades for vessel heads, knuckles and weight-loss corrosion up to a weld or re-pad. The Pipeline Inspectors Kit (N88-PI), Special Pipeline Inspectors Kit (N88-SPI), Inspectors Kit (N88-IS) for API 510, 570 and 653 inspectors, Marine Inspectors Kit (N88-MI) with a magnetic reaching blade for hull work, and Cylinder Inspectors Kit (N88-CI) for pressurised gas cylinders follow the same idea. The Pipeline Weld Supervisors Kit (N88-PW) pairs a Reaching Pit Gauge with W-FI-10 field indicators, because a bevelled pipe end carrying more than 10 gauss leads to welds rejected by UT or radiography.

Two specialty gauges sit in this range. The Tube Sheet Pit Gauge fits inside ½ in OD boiler tube, with an axially mounted indicator that rotates through 360°, a working length of up to 500 mm and a range of 3.8 mm (0.150 in) resolving to 0.01 mm. And because no standards body has adopted a procedure for calibrating pit depth gauges, Western wrote one and makes the N88-FBH Calibration Block: 150 × 75 × 25 mm, with four flat-bottom holes of 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 mm nominal depth, supplied with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate.
