Matherne's power tong system indicates the torque applied to each joint when running pipe or casing, helping to ensure proper make-up and reduce drill collar and tool joint failures. It comprises a 6-inch tong torque indicator with bracket, a standard 5 ft hose and a tension or compression load cell, and an adjustable target pointer lets the driller work to a clear mark. Iron roughneck torque gauges read make-up and break-out torque on tubular connections.
On the rotary table, the Tru-Torque system uses compression load cells on opposite corners of the table to read torque on the drill string in true ft-lb, calibrated to 2% of full scale. The conventional rotary torque system gives a relative reading in points (500 or 1,000) to help avoid twist-offs during coring, milling and reaming.
